FAQs
Who can register?
The Solo/Ensemble Contest is an event reserved for CVGPA Members. All musicians who. participate in a performing ensemble of the current season and meet the qualifications to participate in the circuit championship may register.
How “small” is a “Small-Ensemble”?
The CVGPA definition for “Small Ensemble” designates any ensemble with 2-5 unique members on the performance floor. (Why “unique”? A musician performing 3 different instruments will not count as 3 musicians- they are still one person).
How will Percussion work?
Due to the challenges that some of our more distantly-located ensembles face with carrying equipment to the same show site 2 days in a row, the Percussion S/E now occurs in tandem with the Color Guard Championship, in the ‘black box’ theater of Enochs HS.. CVGPA is careful about ensuring that the solo/ensemble performance times will not collide witht heir corresponding color guard ‘s performance time. (Ex: a peformer from Frank Ticheli HS Percussion will not be scheduled within a 15-minute block of the Frank Ticheli HS Color Guard).
Who is judging?
The judging panel will constitute one judge per division (color guard, percussion). While VVGPA boasts a wonderful roster of some of the minds that defined this very activity, CVGPA fosters the community talent and reaches out to high-ed performers that are products of this very circuit.
Will they be jduged the same as the large ensembles?
No - SoloEnsemble has its own sheets and rubrics.. The 2025 iteration is being vetted and will be available within the 2025 Membership handbook so that all performers know exactly what the judges are looking for in their performances.
When will the winners be announced?
All participants who take on this challenge will receive acknowledgment for their work (and our top-3 of each category will receive something extra) during their respoective award ceremonies.
